G-BOMBS: why you need them to get strong & fit!

What are G-BOMBS?

It is an acronym that Dr. Joel Fuhrman uses to help us easily remember the best anti-cancer, health-promoting foods on the planet. Dr. Fuhrman, MD is a board-certified family physician and nutritional researcher who specializes in preventing and reversing disease using excellent nutrition.

Make sure to get these foods in your belly! Incorporate them into your diet regularly. These 6 foods are extremely effective at preventing chronic disease, including cancer. In addition, they aid in promoting health and boosting your immune system. So what does G-BOMBS stand for? Here we go!

G = Greens

  • Raw leafy greens contain only about 100 calories per pound, and contain many nutrients.

  • GOOD NEWS! They are an excellent tool for weight loss and you can be consumed unlimited quantities.

  • Leafy greens are also the most nutrient-rich of all foods, but, unfortunately are only consumed in small amounts in a typical American diet.

  • Leafy greens are also rich in antioxidants.

  • Super Greens or Power Greens premixed salad is always on my grocery list (since they are hardier they seem to last longer than the Spring Mix type of salad, in my opinion).

B = Beans

  • Beans (and other legumes as well) contain a load of nutrition, and are the most nutrient-rich in the carbohydrate family.

  • Beans are digested slowly so they don’t spike your sugar levels which helps with feeling full and preventing food craving. Therefore, they are a great food to help with weight-loss food. Plus, they contain soluble fiber, meaning it helps in the pooping department.

  • We try to eat beans, peas or lentils at least twice a week.

  • If you are scared of beans because they give you gas, a tip is try adding a piece of Kombu (Kombu is a type of sea vegetable that contains many benefits as well) when cooking to help with digestion and reduce gas. Just don’t eat it, take it out once you are done cooking the beans.

O= Onions

  • Onions, along with leeks, garlic, chives, shallots, and scallions (which are in the same family of vegetables) have many positive effects on the cardiovascular and immune systems.

  • Onions also contain high concentrations antioxidants and also are an anti-inflammatory food.

M = Mushrooms

  • Consuming mushrooms regularly is associated with decreased risk of certain types of cancers.

  • White, cremini, Portobello, oyster, shiitake, maitake, and reishi mushrooms all have anti-cancer properties—some are anti-inflammatory, stimulate the immune system, slow cancer cell growth, and more!

  • Mix and match different types of mushrooms to receive all of its benefits.

  • Make sure to cook your mushrooms!

B = Berries

  • Strawberries, blueberries and blackberries really are super foods.

  • They are naturally sweet and juicy, are low in sugar and high in nutrients. They are full of antioxidants, in fact berries are some of the highest antioxidant foods that exist.

  • Berries are among the best foods you can eat.

S = Seeds

  • Seeds and nuts contain healthy fats and are rich in micronutrients.

  • When it comes to the nutritional characteristics of seeds, they are similar to nuts in terms of healthy fats, minerals, and antioxidants, but seeds are also plentiful in minerals. They higher in protein than nuts, and the cool thing is that each kind of seed is nutritionally different.

  • Flax chia, and hemp seeds are extremely rich sources of omega-3 fats.

  • Flaxseeds are also rich in fiber, just make sure they are ground (whole flax seeds may pass through your intestine undigested, meaning you won’t get all the benefits).

  • Sunflower seeds are rich in protein and minerals.

  • Pumpkin seeds are rich in iron and calcium and are a good source of zinc.

  • Sesame seeds have the greatest amount of calcium of any food in the world, and high a great amount of vitamin E.

  • The healthy fats in seeds and nuts also aid in the absorption of nutrients when eaten with vegetables.
